PLUS for Cultural Heritage

PLUS forms new Cultural Heritage Working Group.

The PLUS Cultural Heritage Working Group (PLUS-CH) is now forming to ensure that the PLUS standards will fully support the communication and management of image rights by and between museums, libraries, researchers and educational institutions.

PLUS-CH will review all PLUS standards.  The PLUS Packs standard will be revised to include rights packages typically granted in cultural heritage licensing workflows.  The PLUS License Data Format will be revised to include additional fields and controlled vocabulary values useful in communicating and managing image rights for preservation and other cultural heritage purposes. The PLUS Glossary and Media Matrix will be revised to incorporate additional terms and usages relevant to museum and library workflows.

Leading PLUS-CH is PLUS Board member, Alan Newman, Chief of the Division of Imaging and Visual Services of the National Gallery of Art. Says Newman, "the PLUS metadata framework fills a critical void in digital image licensing and preservation workflow for cultural institutions, assuring that image provenance is well documented and embedded in the file. PLUS standards development, embracing museum and library requirements, is a significant opportunity for every museum, library and educational institution.”

Participating institutions include the Getty Research Institute, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Israel Museum and others. For more information or to join the PLUS Cultural Heritage Working Group, contact Alan Newman.
